Beach Cruisers Look Out for That….

Enjoying an easy ride on my beach cruiser down a country road.  Taking in the scenery of the passing fields, woods and farms that dot the landscape.  The smell of spring flowers and newly mowed grass wafting under my nose.  My mind wanders to days gone by.  As I pedal up a hill my breathing becomes labored and I open my mouth wide to get the oxygen my body needs…….Aaaghhh!  Brake hard. Sputtht, sputtht!  Stop.  Deep breath, spit, spit, spit again, snort, spit again.  Eyes watering.  Mouth bitter.  Uughhh.  Disgusting!  Push my beach cruiser to the top of the hill.  Nasty!  Spit again.  Head for home.  Back to reality.  Look out for that bug!

Beach Cruiser Riders Be Careful!

Be Careful!  How many times did your mom tell you that before you took off on your bike or in your car or with friends?  Well I’m going to be mom today, “be careful when riding your beach cruiser.”  I say, you can never be too cautious when looking out for number one.  After a collision, many motorists claim they did not see the bicyclist.  Were they distracted or not paying attention?  Did the bicyclist blend in with the road?  Did someone not follow the rules of the road?  These are all reasons for the bicyclist to be invisible.  Most beach cruisers are colorful but the riders should also wear bright clothing and safety gear and use bicycle lights to make themselves overly obvious.  And riders, please follow the rules of the road.  Do not go on a red light or cut between cars, because then it’s your own fault.  So the next time you ride your cruiser bicycle remember what mom said!

Beach Cruisers: Safe Riding

When riding a beach cruiser bicycle on pavement or in the presence of motorized vehicles, one should always wear a helmet.  My personal opinion is that helmets are optional in safer environments such as on grassy trails, boardwalks and beaches.  When I see a bicyclist in traffic without safety gear, all I can vision is them in an ICU bed attached to life support and surrounded by crying family members.  I know that’s the worst case scenario but  having worked in health care for many years, I know it’s a reality.  So be a responsible beach cruiser rider and wear a helmet, it may save your life.  But you say, “I hate those ugly helmets, they don’t match my bicycle style”.  Well, check out hat helmets, they look like hats but have a helmet base to protect your noggin.  Be safe and stylish!

Beach Cruiser: Ride Like a Kid

How do you feel when you ride your beach cruiser bicycle?  That may seem like a strange question but just think about it for a minute.  When I ride my beach cruiser I feel like a kid again.  Well maybe not physically, as my old knee joints slowly loosen up, but in my mind I’m a 10 year old riding with the wind in my hair, the sun on my face and not a care in the world.  I feel the freedom of the outdoors and leave my worries at home.  It not only  refreshes my mind but my body as well.

Beach Cruiser Vacation

When I go on a beach vacation, sometimes I get bored just hanging out at the pool or the beach.  I like to explore the area and a great way to do that is on a beach cruiser.  Local bike rental shops can provide cruisers for the whole family and also give you some ideas on where to bicycle.  You can go places on a bicycle that can’t be reached by motor vehicle.  Travel down side roads to explore indigenous flora and wildlife, find secluded beaches with whole seashells or stop at a shaded picnic area to have a snack.  You can also find interesting shops, restaurants and entertainment when you get off the beaten path.  So next time you go on a beach vacation try exploring on a beach cruiser, never know what fun you might find!

Beach Cruisers for the Young Ladies

If I were a young girl today I would want a baby blue beach cruiser!  That’s right, not a pink one because I’m not a girly girl.  There’s nothing wrong with pink or purple, it’s just that blue is my favorite color.  When I was a teenager I had a royal blue three-speed bicycle.  Before that I had a stingray bike with a banana seat but I don’t remember the color.  If I had to choose a beach cruiser today, I would pick the Micargi Jetta 20 inch for girls.  This sturdy yet attractive bicycle comes in pink, purple, mint green and baby blue.  Perfect for the young lady who wants to cruise in style.

Beach Cruiser’s Purpose

You may be wondering what is the purpose of a beach cruiser bicycle?

Colorful Beach Cruisers

Colorful Beach Cruisers

It seems that other bicycles have a purpose, a specific reason they are manufactured, purchased and ridden.  Many bicycles are used for the sole purpose of competition, such as BMX, mountain bikes and touring bikes.  These sleek machines are durable, designed to go fast and travel through rough terrain.  And what about those bikes used in the XGames?  They are made precisely for doing tricks on the half-pipe and other dangerous stunts.  There are numerous examples of other specialized bicycles and their intended uses but let’s get back to the cruiser bike.  Now, I suppose you could ride a beach cruiser in a BMX race, on a mountain trail or attempt a 360 on the pipe but it might look silly and be humiliating when you get booed off the course.  Not to mention you might get injured.  So, I believe the sole purpose of owning and riding a beach cruiser is FUN!  Fun colors and fun styles for the carefree amusement of riding a bicycle.  Pure and simple.  Fun in the sun!  Go ride!
